Colony Cluster Decommisioning

    Feb 03, 2019

For over 10 years The Colony Cluster has served as a resource to help researchers get their research done in a quick and efficient fashion. It started out by filling a gap whereby Compute Canada did not have a method that a researcher could contribute resources to the cluster and have high priority access to their equipment, while also gaining access to the greater system as a whole.

No longer is this the case. Compute Canada now has a robust offering of services including the ability to host contributed nodes specific for research needs at a much greater scale and with regular hardware refreshes. The newer capabilities within Compute Canada has rendered the necessity for The Colony Cluster and its mostly obsolete hardware to be no longer be a viable resource for research computation.

Major Failure of FASnet KVM Infrastructure [resolved]

    Jan 12, 2018

On the heels of our major failure of VMWare Infrastructure and subsequent migration to KVM, today we unfortunately suffered a major failure of our KVM infrastructure.

At approximately 11:30 AM on Friday, January 12th, 2018, all of our KVM Virtual Machines (about 80 of them) went down. This was worse than Wednesday’s outage, because not only did we lose all the VMs we had migrated from VMWare, but we also lost existing VMs that we already had on KVM. This included the mailservers that handle the incoming eSupport e-mail for all of the SFU campus. Consequently, nobody could send e-mail into eSupport. (Opening a ticket via the web interface at https://esupport.sfu.ca/ still worked, though.)

Major Failure of FASnet VMWare Infrastructure, and Migration to KVM [resolved]

    Jan 11, 2018

The VMWare failure that was reported on Friday, January 5th, got worse over the weekend, due to local disk failures on one of the Hypervisors. This resulted in the loss of some VMs that were using the local disk array instead of the EqualLogic iSCSI device. For example, the **rcg-linux-ts1.rcg.sfu.ca** VM was lost and couldn’t be recovered.

Things became critical on Wednesday, January 10th, as the EqualLogic continued to degrade, resulting in a massive outage of our VMWare infrastructure that lasted all day. This outage included our Linux Terminal Servers, rcg-linux-ts1.rcg.sfu.ca, rcg-linux-ts2.rcg.sfu.ca, and rcg-linux-ts3.rcg.sfu.ca, as well as our samba/print server rcg-bluebell.rcg.sfu.ca, our license server orchid.fas.sfu.ca, the Colony Cluster head node rcg-queen.rcg.sfu.ca, and more.

Major Failure of FASnet Services [resolved]

    Jan 05, 2018

The EqualLogic iSCSI device that acts as the datastore for our VMWare infrastucture suffered a disk failure, and this caused a couple of the hypervisors to go down shortly after noon today. The VMs hosted on these hypervisors crashed and became unavailable, including our samba/print server rcg-bluebell.rcg.sfu.ca, our license server orchid.fas.sfu.ca, our linux terminal server rcg-linux-ts3.rcg.sfu.ca, and our web services that host the page you’re currently reading.

By 2:00 PM the EqualLogic disk had been replaced and the hypervisors were booted up. It took until well after 3:00 PM before all the VMs were back on-line.

Problems with Linux Modules Environment and CSIL Homes

    Dec 04, 2017

There is a problem today with the NFS server rcg-nfs02.its.sfu.ca, which hosts the Linux modules environment and also hosts the home directories for the Computer Science Instructional Lab (CSIL). The problem started at about 1:30 PM on Monday, December 4th, 2017 and was temporarily fixed at around 2:45 PM, but then it started happening again at around 3:30 PM. As of 5:30 PM it is still ongoing.

During the outage, many CSIL computers were rebooted and subsequently came up with local home directories instead of the network home directories served by rcg-nfs02.its.sfu.ca. This may cause some confusion for students because the local home directories will be empty and they may think that their files have gone missing. The loss is only temporary, until rcg-nfs02 is fixed.
